I have collected recipes for as long as I can remember. I've had recipe boxes, jammed full of clipped out recipes and scribbled down index cards. I finally realized that I needed to find a better way to store my recipes. So, I bought a recipe software program where I could type recipes, print out the recipes on computer paper, slip them into a plastic protective cover-- then place them in a labeled binder. (This was very time consuming, to say the least.) That worked out really well, until I had about 10 jam backed binders. Fast forward to my beginning stages of staring this food blog, in 2008.
I discovered the Key Ingredient Website, and I have never looked back. Adding a recipe takes less than five minutes!
One of my favorite features is the Cookmark Button. If I see a recipe on a website, I can highlight the recipe, press the "Cookmark Button" and a recipe card is automatically created for me! I appreciate how Key Ingredient automatically adds the recipe source website address.
How cool is that!
I have created my own profile, so that I can easily organize my recipes, and where people can follow me. A new feature that Key Ingredient has added (and I really like this one) is that if someone sees one of my recipes, they can "clone it. However, they cannot change the source-- so the recipe always links back to me. I love that!
See? Here's one of my own recipe cards, that happens to be my #1 Most Viewed Recipe on my food blog. (I guess that Meat Loaf is really popular.) A big bonus to food bloggers-- Key Ingredient does drive more traffic to my website. Nice.
So, what does this website cost? Nothing! It's free! There's no advertising, and I have never received any kind of SPAM email.
I don't own an iPad (yet), but if you do, they have an iPad version.
I do have an iPhone, and I have their free Key Ingredient app.
The Key Ingredient recipe cards can be easily emailed, added to Pinterest, tweeted-- it's got all the social bells and whistles you could ask for. What more could you want?
Well, how about a Digital Recipe Box? Meet Key Ingredients newly released Recipe Reader!!
Next to my stand mixer, this is one kitchen tool that I cannot be without! I have over 500 recipes that I have saved onto Key Ingredient, and they are organized in 22 of my own different cookbooks. The Recipe Reader is an invaluable companion to Key Ingredient Recipe Cards, because they can be stored onto your recipe reader!
I owned the original DEMY recipe reader, and I loved it. I found a video that demonstrates a lot of the features I've talked about. (This DEMY version is no longer available, but you can view this You Tube video by clicking here.)
This new Recipe Reader is truly new and improved. Besides the new sleek black look, it has so many great features:
- It's now wireless! Once I programmed my router information, the Recipe Reader automatically goes to my Key Ingredient account, and updates any recipes I've added, when I turn it on.
- The Recipe Reader is cordless, so you don't have to worry about electrical cords getting in the way. (It comes with a recharger.)
- I can search for a recipe by cookbook, or category. A new-- and much appreciated new feature is-- I can search for a recipe by ingredient. Yay!
- Just like an iPad or Smart Phone, you can flip through screen with your fingertips.
- The screen can easily be wiped with a damp cloth, if you spill ingredients on it.
- There are some pre-loaded recipes, included with the Recipe Reader. A new feature is, I can delete the whole cookbook or just the recipes I don't want to keep. I'm so happy about this new feature.
- I can increase the font size, if I can't remember where I set my reading glasses.
- There are three different timers built in. I love this feature!
- There is a conversion calculator and a lengthy ingredient substitution list.
- I especially love the "Short List" feature. If I'm making a few recipes, I can save them to the Short List, so I can easily flip back and forth with different recipes.
- Did I mention that it's now wireless? I so love this new feature the best. Of course, you can use a USB cable, just like the former DEMY model did.
The Recipe Reader isn't large and cumbersome, either.
Plus, it can be set up in to different positions-- Portrait or Landscape.
I bought my original DEMY Recipe Reader for $199.95, almost three years ago. It has never failed me, even though it didn't have some of the new features that I've just listed. A few months ago, Key Ingredient allowed me to trade in my old DEMY for this new Recipe Reader, so that I could become acquainted with it.
I have to tell you, that their customer service is stellar. If I had a question, or had some challenges getting the Recipe Reader to sync, wirelessly, "Heath" immediately emailed me back, and walked me through the process.
On Sunday, September 23rd, the Recipe Reader was launched with QVC at an introductory price of $161.72 (plus shipping).
I am so pleased with my sleek new Recipe Reader, that I asked Key Ingredient if I could offer a Contest/Giveaway-- and would they provide one Recipe Reader to my readers?
Guess what? They said "yes"!
You want to one of these. I know it. I cannot imagine not having my Recipe Reader, at my fingertips. I no longer have to worry about printing out a recipe that I've saved-- nor do I have to risk setting my laptop on my kitchen counter, and worry about spilling liquid on the keyboard.
You must leave a comment on my blog to enter. Comments on my Facebook page don't count, sorry. Share with us how you've been saving your own recipes, or how many recipes you think you have saved. Or just say hello, and where are you from? For one additional entry, please follow me on Twitter and tweet this contest, and leave a comment that you've done so..For one additional entry, follow me on Facebook, and leave a comment that you've done so.I will give you two entries if you create a free account on Key Ingredient, and follow me there. Leave me a comment, here, telling me you've done so.You will get two more entries if you create one recipe card, on Key Ingredient, and use the hashtag #foodiewifecontest Leave me a comment, here, telling me you've done so.
THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED. THANK YOU FOR ENTERING.
I'm most excited about seeing what kind of recipes I'll find, from those of you who share one. I'm always looking for inspiration.
Disclaimer: I paid for my own Recipe Reader, and Key Ingredient has not paid me for my review. My review is my own honest opinion-- and believe me, I love my Recipe Reader! Thank you, Key Ingredient for sponsoring this giveaway!
Good luck!

How cool is THAT?! And I was just complaining over the weekend about missing my laptop cuz I can't move my desktop into my kitchen and I hate wasting all that paper printing recipes out all the time. I think I kinda need this, don't you?

I added a recipe to Key Ingredient but I don't know if I did the hashtag thing right LOL
Hi, I am a Singaporean fan who is currently in Allen, TX. I don't have anywhere particular to keep my recipes, I record my experience in my blog!
Liked Facebook
Have been really enjoying your website! I was raised in a small family restaurant and bakery but didn't cook until I was over 30! Parents and business are gone but it seems I'm cooking now more than ever. My husband is a cancer survivor and we've taken up gardening and I've got to figure out what to do with all those veggies! I've got folders filled with endless printed out recipes and it takes forever to go back and find something that I tried a few months past. This amazing little device looks like a magic box! Just a note: your photography is beautiful and I find that I follow a recipe much closer when there are step by step pictures!
Love, love, love using my Ipad in my kitchen. This Recipe Reader would be wonderful. Like Danielle Nichols intimated, not having a desktop in the kitchen would be a dream! Your plan is wonderful and winner or not, I plan to use it.
Facebooked, opened Key Account and saved your buttermilk pancake recipe with berries! I'll attempt to post a recipe tomorrow. I'm hooked! Great place to find recipe ideas and I'm always looking for new ideas as I cook at my church and there is every appetite from meat eaters to vegan to glutten free to picky kids! LOL!
How fabulous. I have tons of recipes stuck in files and it grows by the day. Thanks for the great give-away.

I like you on Facebook already, but I left a comment so you would know I was there.

This is so cool! I use my tablet and kindle in the kitchen for cooking but this would be so much better (and my daughter would be excited over it too)
What a neat offer to all of us. I check your blog almost every day to see if something new has been added. It's one of my favorite. I will look into Key ingredient!
I'm already following you on Facebook friend!
This is how I save my recipes now...print them out and put them in a binder with a sheet protector, and I also have a big wicker basket with folders that I use. It's the not best system, but it works for now! Thanks for the chance and winning this great gift!
I save mine on Pinterest, my hard drive or print them out. Not the best system. LOL
I save my recipes I like in a spiral notebook. I have recipes to try all over the place, in recipe boxes on websites and folders filled with recipes written down, printed, or torn out of magazines.
I have studied Key Ingredient on your blog for the last three years...always thinking I should do it.....instead, I have files of recipes on the computer, piles of recipes in the cupboard, stacks of binders, and a real mess! I have been looking for options that are supported on blogger...this seems to be it. Thinkin' it is time to make the move...

Oh my goodness !I would LOVE to win this! I follow your blog, like you on FB, am going to attempt to retweet this post (not too twitter savvy) and love your Pinterest boards. Right now I have four spiral binders, plus probably a 6" stack of recipes from magazines and printed from online that I need to organize. I also have a Recipes folder in my email and also three pinterset boards for recipes..plus my blog! I really could use this!

What a great idea! Thanks for sharing.
This is fantastic as my recipes are totally unorganized...some printed, some in email, some bookmarked, some in word docs and some at various recipe sites...etc.
I'm following you on Facebook and also on Key Ingredient.
I have a hope chest full of folder of printed recipes. I used to bookmark online recipes and save them on my computer, but now I use Pinterest instead.
I "like" you on Facebook. :)
This Recipe Reader would be fantastic.I follow you on Facebook,I love your pictures. Thanks for the great Giveaway.
I used to save my recipes on cards, then I learned how to create my own forms in Outlook and thought that was genius! I created a recipe card and transferred all of my recipes to Outlook, including categories so I could sort them any way I wanted. That worked out AWESOME for a few years until I needed a new computer. Found out the hard way you can't export custom forms!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I'm back to having recipes everywhere. Google Reader, Pinterest, LoveIt, recipe cards, scanned into my computer, etc. I have Word documents set up for different categories and a Master Index with bookmarks so I can go to the index, click a recipe and it automatically opens that document/recipe. That's how I store the "keepers." Everything else stays where it is until I try it and decide if I want to keep it, change it, ditch it, etc.
Thanks for this opportunity. Sounds like a great device. :)

I have been on Key Ingredient for years. Love Love Love it. I used to have bookcase after bookcase with cookbooks, magazines and slips of paper that I printed. I now only have 1 shelf of cookbooks, my favs I can't part with. I have always toyed with the idea or 'organizing' it was a nightmare not to see the light of day. When I found the Demy I was in heaven. It took 1 full week to go through each magazine and book to glean the recipes I wanted and put them on Key Ingredient. the rest I shall say is history. Although I don't have as many recipes as you, I am up there over 250. I have the original Demi and can't cook without it. I am waiting ever so patiently (NOT) for my email with the opportunity to purchase the new one at a discount. But free would be great. I don’t 'Tweet' but have liked you on Facebook, and as I have said before I am already on Key ingredient and use it every week. I have started to follow you on Key Ingredient and have added your hash tag to my Basque Salad dressing recipe.
Cheers!
Julie
I added a recipe to Key Ingredient at: http://www.keyingredient.com/recipes/14682043/cream-kadayif/
I do have a question though ... I am following you and Danielle at Peaceful Cooking and noticed that when I went to the recipe she had uploaded per this post, I had to option to Edit, Delete, etc. I'm not sure if that means I could actually edit or delete her recipes, or just the version of her recipe store in my collection? If others can change/delete my recipes, I'm not sure I'll like this????
I love your blog and would love this recipe reader!
THIS is a cool gadget!! I'd love to gift one of these to my son, who has spent many years in the kitchen with me and will be moving out on his own this fall - I think it would be a great tool to KEEP him cooking (so I'll know he's eating right!)
I opened a Key Ingredient account and followed you :)
I really enjoy your website and look forward to each new recipe you post. I find your comments really useful.
I am storing my recipes in binders, but it's hard to find what I'm looking for.

fantastic idea! I can't wait to win it!

This is impressive! Watched it on the "Q"on Sunday! I would so love one. I have thousands of recipes in notebooks, on rolodexes, etc! It would be a dream to have them all in one place, or at least access!! Like you on Facebook and pinned you on Pinterest! Your lemon curd, blueberry pancakes are on the menu for this Saturday morning!! Thanks!
Debby,
Just a quick note to let you know how much I LOVE your blog. I've been cooking for over 40 years and the recipes on your blog are some of my favorites.
As a side note, I love gadgets too
Keep up the good work

The Recipe Reader looks like a dream come true! Would love to win one!
I am now an email follower of A Feast For the Eyes. Thank you for the awesome giveaway! I've been lugging my laptop to the kitchen for years now. A smaller gadget would be so handy.
I follow A Feast For the Eyes on Facebook. Thanks!
Thanks for offering this prize - Tuesday just got more exciting!
Hey! Years ago I started a blog dawns-recipes.blogspot.com to hold all my recipes. I have a life time of recipes to try and when I come across a keeper, it makes it on my blog. Sure keeps my recipes organized. Thanks for the great giveaway!

I have recipes in old shoe boxes and when I get a bee in my bonnet I have to go through a million pieces of paper to find the one I want - if I can find it at all!!! I would truly LOVE this gadget! Thanks for the opportunity to win - and the great gift idea for myself and my daughter!
I'm following you on Facebook, too!
I saw that on QVC Sunday! Looks cool and would love to have

I currently pin recipes that I would like to try or have tried on Pinterest. I have probably at least 1500 pins for recipes, most of which I will probably never make, but looked good and may want to try sometime. I love to collect recipes just in the event I want to try it sometime. I love to cook, but some of the things I pin, I know my family won't eat.
I follow on Facebook!! :)

I love Key Ingredient, thanks for the link. I just posted my first ever recipe! Potato Spinach Pie - you can acess my email link by clicking on my name and/or avatar)
I've kept my recipes in binders, recipe boxes and just stacked up together. A digital recipe box would be amazing! I am going on Key Ingredient to check it out....
I pin everything to Pinterest, but it definitely has it's drawbacks. Love this idea!
I have old recipe cards, printed stacks, favorite books with pages turned down, folders on my old PC, folders in my email, new folders on the laptop... (SIGH) Guess I really need one of these.

Hi Debby, What a wonderful Giveaway. I joined Key Ingredient ages ago after finding it via your blog which I follow. I don't use KI as much as I should, but then my iMac is in my office. In 1992 I had so many great recipes that I corralled them into a cookbook that I gave away to family and friends for Christmas. Still use it, but my collection has grown, probably into the thousands. Everything was on my Macbook until I fried it by spilling water on it and all was lost :( . So I started over. I would love to have the reader. Would follow you on Facebook and Twitter if I could figure out how. Left my recipe for Danish Kale Soup on Key Ingredients with #foodiewifecontest as a tag, was that right?
Hiya, saw this handy dandy gadget on QVC, was wondering if I actually needed it, but winning one would be the be all end all....thanks for the contest!
Wow, what a wonderful gift this would be. I can certainly relate to your former way of keeping recipes.
I have recipes in little recipe boxes, I have recipes in large storage boxes. I find recipes everywhere and keep too many.....Pinterest has helped. I pin recipes now and print them out when I'm going to make them, instead of having a pile of printed recipes I need to go through to find the one I want. I want to be organized, I'm working on it.
What a great kitchen tool! I still keep recipes stacked in boxes by category and it is sometimes a nightmare trying to find a special one. Fantastic giveaway, Debby.
Facebooked!
This sounds like a great tool - I am currently doing the recipes in a sheet protector in a binder method.
I actually use binders right now divided up by category... beef, seafood, desserts, apps, pasta, etc. This would definitely be a handy tool! missjill0521@yahoo.com

Apologies if this is posted a second time as I got an error message.
I save my recipes in Word, on Pinterest, on hand-written recipe cards, and pages torn from magazines.
Of course I follow you on Twitter and tweeted: http://foodiewife-kitchen.blogspot.com/2012/09/key-ingredient-recipe-reader-your.html
And I follow, not stalk, you on Facebook. Thanks for the generous giveaway.
Recipe reader sounds too good to be true. I've been following your blog for over a year and enjoy your recipes very much. I would love to win this recipe reader and get rid of all my binders.
I'm still at the type-print-store in binder stage of recipe organization. As you had noted, this is very time consuming, and the binders take up a lot of room. I'm so intrigued by this recipe reader. Thank you so much for the chance to win one!

I have been waiting for a website like this!! I have been complaining for years that I can't easily find links to my recipes - I end up with a long list of recipe names in my favorites folder in my browser on 2 different computers. I kept trying to find a way to save the URLs using bookmarks in google or some other way, but it just never seemed easy. Thank you for telling us about the site!!
Following you on my new Key Ingredient account and following you on FB! Very excited to use this - hoping it will help me with my weekly meal planning, which I do on Sunday nights! I've found pictures are a must when trying to plan out meals for the week - somehow it just makes it easier when looking through so many recipes!
